This is a very entertaining verse, as Chance satirises and subverts the streotypical ‘bitches aint shit’ attitude towards women often expressed in rap.

These bars stand out, especially the euphemistic and somewhat gross last line, which amused me when I listened to it.Ĭhance the Rapper comes with a verse full of cutesy curses on his ex. This is clearly expressed in the hook, and in the first verse, where he lays these bars down: ‘Because you treat me like shit/I paid for the bed and never even slept in it/I paid for that crib I never stepped foot in/And now somebody else is eating all the pudding’ and ‘Girl, we grown, stop playing on my phone, baby/All your childish attempts to make me angry fall short/Which only fuels the rage you have, because you have nothing’ (source: Rap Genius). In his second verse, Bronson seems to be wooing his next potential conquest: ‘Go on a date, I’m at the crib with the chef and uh, that’s me/And you could order whatever/The specialty is white snake and underwear sauce’ (source: Rap Genius). You can especially feel this in the outro, with Chance the Rapper’s vocals and the brass elements.īronson’s lyrics are addressed to a hypothetical ex girlfriend in the tune, and he has moved on from her. There is also unmistakeable soul and blues influences within the sound as well, contributing to a real groovy feel to the song. However, be under no illusion, this is a hip hop beat through and through. His rejection of electronic instruments is daring but refreshing, this decision definitely adds to the freshness of the sound. Also, ASAP Rocky has close ties with London, living for prolonged periods in the capital while making his album At Long Last ASAP. The song itself was made in London, hinting at a growing trend of US rappers looking to the UK, as we’ve already seen when Kanye West brought Skepta, Stormzy, Jammer and Krept and Konan out at the Brit Awards. Baby Blue was produced by UK artist Mark Ronson.
